$5 Indian Head Half Eagle

Sculpted by Bela Lyon Pratt, the $5 Indian Head Half Eagle coin is one of two coins designed by this sculptor (the other being the $2.50 Indian gold coin.) President Roosevelt played an important role in the re-design of this smaller gold coin, commissioning Pratt (once a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens) on the recommendation of his good friend, Dr. William Sturgis Bigelow.

Interestingly, the coin features on its obverse, the first true American Indian Chief to appear on a U.S coin. Previously, Caucasian models somewhat awkwardly attired in American Indian dress were featured.

This authentic chief wears a full-feathered headdress bearing the word LIBERTY on its head band. He is circled by a border of thirteen stars, with minting date also included.

The Indian Half Head Eagle front face depicts a bald eagle, standing proudly aloft olive branches, and looking at the words UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the motto IN GOD WE TRUST.
